The color of a persons aura

So, what does a modern woman do with some free time (sans tour group) in Sedona, AZ? Why, she goes shopping and explores the spirituality of this amazing place, of course. My hotel, in addition to boasting an awesome view from my own private balcony, was conveniently located in the heart of a major retail district. Much better than any mall, this street was chock-full of Southwestern jewelry and other Indian-made wares, such as horse hair pottery and kachina dolls. And, there was also an enormous variety of eclectic shops, featuring hand-painted animal beads for jewelry-making, prickly pear cactus-flavored candy, tequila lollipops (complete with worm) and all things metaphysical.

So, against a backdrop of red mountain ranges, with an abundance of community artwork on display, I treated myself to the shopping experience of a lifetime. I browsed through books containing information on crystals, vortex sites, the after-life, psychic mediums and dream studies without being judged. My level of comfort was so great, in fact, that I even did something that I’d been curious about for quite some time. I got a picture taken. A picture of my aura, that is.

In uptown Sedona, there are tarot card and palm readers at every corner, so getting an aura photo in this environment is as natural as taking a breath. For those of you who might be interested, my primary color (at least on that day) was orange-yellow, but I was also surrounded by shades of green, blue and lots of extra white. This implied (or so I was told) “a creative, adventurous spirit and the pursuit of passion with a pure heart.” The store’s owner went on to elaborate. “You can do anything, really,” she said, “but it has to move you. Otherwise, there’s no point. You are very open to new ideas, but things need to make sense. You are interested in a lot of different things and become bored easily. Once you start to lose interest in something, or someone, you move on. And, you would be best suited in a creative profession, such as writing or art.”

I was floored. I certainly hadn’t expected her to offer up so much information. Sure, a case can be made that this woman’s words were just a lot of generalizations strung together for entertainment purposes. But, whether by intuition, aura reading or dumb luck, she had managed to point out the best (and the worst) in me with just a few short sentences.

Excited, amazed and, at the same time, a wee bit sad, I walked next door to buy myself a bite to eat. After I had made my selections, I stepped back out into the sun, and sat down in front of an elaborate metal sculpture. It depicted an Indian couple gathering water.

Lunch, as it were, consisted of a dark chocolate-covered strawberry, raspberry jelly sticks and a champagne truffle. Why not? For one thing, I was on vacation. And, for another, a perfect stranger had just called me out as a free spirit with an inability to fully commit to any one thing, or any one person.

On the up side, I got to prove something I’d suspected all along. No matter what state you’re in – Connecticut, Arizona or even a state of denial or confusion, chocolate is good. I dipped my aura in it and went on with the rest of my day.
