What’s Wrong With Your Writing?

I have just read many of your comments on problems that you have in writing, and most of you cite “writer’s block” or a stopping that you can’t control when you are in the midst of a story or essay.

After a generation of writing in most genres, I think the clue to and end to your problems

is two-fold: First, set a goal of, say, a thousand words a week. And DO it!

Second, relax, assume that you have in your mind all you need to successfully complete your idea, and hit that keyboard.

There are a few suggestions within each type or kind of writing:

FICTION

Get your entire story completely located in your mind, jotting down sequences until you mentally have the whole affair clear. Then with that outline by you, get into the story on your computer, adding depth and mystery and whatever you wish to use to embellish until you have finished the story. Review it. Correct it. When you feel an exultant satisfaction that it is DONE, print it out and read and recheck the paper copy. This routine applies to short pieces and longer novels as well.

IN-DEPTH SERIOUS ARTICLES

Example: Why do our government representatives betray us?

In this type of writing, the great pitfall is allowing our emotions to surpass fact. We MUST research every statement we make, and not let our heated opinions destroy what might be an helpful essay. The best way to attain that is to remember the old newspaperman rules as told in journalism school: WHO, WHAT, WHEN, WHERE, and HOW, and in that order.

SCIENTIFIC WRITING (Including how-to manuals)

Here your rule of research MUST be strictly adhered to..not only must your sources be excellent and approved and accepted by the agencies you are addressing, but your figures and facts should be rechecked several times. Here you may also call upon experts in your picked field to check out your writing.

WRITING FOR TV NEWS AND NEWSPAPERS

ALL of the above apply here and at the same time, you must enter into the bugaboo of brevity. Papers and TV stations are limited greatly in what they offer you as space. And that TV anchorman or commentator who reads your words may need a more dramatic approach to your story that the newspaper’s dry presentation.

WRITING POETRY AND MUSIC SCORES

Poetry is not really written if it is to be REAL poetry. It is INSPIRED, and comes to the brain and hopefully is translated into a MUST of your own words. It cannot be defined as a skill except to always remember that alliteration is important, the SOUNDS of your words are doubly important, and SPARSE adjectival use is essential.

MUSIC, that is the words that accompany music, is probably the most difficult kind of poetry, for it must not only BE poetry, it must align itself with the already created musical presence.

In some cases, the reverse is true and the poetry can inspire the musician to make the music.

Best of all, of course, is the creative person who does both, the words and the music.

OTHER WRITING

There are other specializations in writing but the above apply very well to them…religious writing, metaphysical essays, descriptions of other arts, sales persuasions, etc.

But mistakes in writing can be almost totally avoided by developing a writing pattern from the above, that learned not only in journalism school but also in many many years of writing for newspapers, novels, movies, and best of all, occasional visits from the poetic muse.

Comparing the SAT and ACT

This year, I entered my junior year of high school. Almost everyone I told this to cringed just at the sound; in most high schools, it’s the real push year. Two things are on everyone’s minds: to get grades as high as possible, and to take standardized tests.

I’m a good student and put a lot of hard work into my study, so the first wasn’t necessarily foremost in my mind, because it was something that I was focusing on all the time. However, the issue of standardized tests concerned me. The SATs and the ACTs are SO important on the college application…but which one is valued more? My cousin, a high school college advisor, encouraged me to take both. He said that colleges can get a broader perspective on what kind of student you are if you give them as much testing information as possible. I heeded his advice and made the decision back in November to take both the SATs and the ACTs.

Before taking either test, I admit that I knew almost everything about the SATs and almost nothing about the ACTs. From what others told me, the SATs were “impossibly hard” and the ACTs much more reasonable. The SATs are what my (and most) high schools really focus on as far as college prep. We’d do practice problems for an hour and a half every week in both English and math classes for the entire year so that we’d be adequately prepared. On top of that, I took outside SAT math tutoring for 5 weeks, as the math instruction I’ve gotten in every school I’ve been in for the last 10 years has been pretty shaky. By the time I took the test, I was dissecting literary passages and solving algebra problems in my sleep. All the hard work paid off; my scores were much improved from every practice test I had taken up to that point.

The ACTs, on the other hand, were more of a mystery to me. Besides the math, English, reading and writing section (all of which were par for the course on standardized tests) there was also a science section. While I’ve taken science classes this year, admittedly, it wasn’t very in-depth. I had focused more on the humanities and artistic electives (I’m planning on going to film school and figured that abstract metaphysical theorems weren’t going to be as important in directing films as, say, photography.) The superficial Chemistry and very basic Biology I received in freshman and sophomore years didn’t help at all with the complex Physics and statistics present on the test. Are paranormal and supernatural activities on the increase?

It’s a legendary source of mystery in magic. Something that exists as common knowledge, yet, holds to it’s own secrets. In the large scheme of things it seems to be a thin line, a necessary boundary that separates the mortal world from the worlds beyond. To witches and psychics alike it is simply known as “The Veil”. But from the point of view of those who have had an encounter with it, it is often seen as anything but a thin line. In point of fact it is a wall that is nearly forty feet thick it most places and most who claim that they can physically see through it could be pointed out as a liar. Seeing through it requires a certain level of gifts.

However, passing through it is something else entirely.

Walking “between the worlds” is fairly simple and painless. Most people pass into or through the veil tie and again throughout their lives, often without ever realizing it. There is nothing physical about it though it can effect the physical. One of the most popular descriptions of the Veil is that of it being like a thick grey fog that is ruled by its own laws. One is able to pass through the veil for short periods of time but are almost inevitably pulled back to their natural side by the veil itself. This law historically effects the interaction between humans and faeries most commonly. Resulting in many tales of tragedy and loss. Especially when love comes into play. Once the veil separates the two it is often enough impossible to physically reunite them again.

Over the years I have been involved in many discussions and studies on the notion that the veil is thinning or has holes in it. There is some evidence to support the theory but in more study, and a lot of time away, I’ve learned that the veil is not thinning per-say so much as it is ebbing and flowing. The veil is not a stationary boundary. It is very fluid and tide-like in motion. Ebbs in the veil has been historically documented and celebrated because of the easier efforts of passage. Samhain is a mark of such an ebb.

But, more recently we have been noticing the emergence of what might be called rough ebbs that those on either side have yet to be able to fully explain. One primary point of consideration is mankind’s rapid influx of unnatural energies into the natural world. One thing that man excels at is the creation of poison, be it physical or metaphysical. Anti-guides, some of you may have heard this name before, though most of you will not have. Anti-guides are one of the metaphysical “nasties” of this world. They are the polar opposite of the more widely recognized spirit guides. Trying to turn your life upside down, convincing you to remove all the good in your life.

Anti-guides are an entity shrouded in mystery for most people. It is not a subject that many wish to touch or have much information on. They are not something that everyone has dealt with, though they are something that many will deal with.

Anti-guides come to people during a moment of extreme emotional weakness. It may be during a bout of depression, a death in the family or maybe just because of all the stress in your life. They use that moment as an in to your life. People who are psychic or more prone to depression are more likely to acquire an anti-guide.

Anti-guides will work at you whispering to you attempting to get you to do things you would not even normally consider in the least. They start out with small things like convincing you to steal a cookie or something you would not consider to be all that bad building up your trust in them making you think that it is your own self telling you to do these things.

Recognizing that this voice exists outside yourself can help a great deal, but because of the way they operate building your trust until you find it to be nothing more than a part of yourself this can be very difficult to figure out. Your best chance of is to identify it right away. The longer you wait to do something then the harder it will be to banish the anti-guide from your life.

Getting rid of your anti-guide can be as simple as recognizing what it is, but other things may have to be done as well. Ignoring the anti-guide can aid in eliminating it’s presence with in your life. When you take the fear you have or work on moving your life forward making it better the anti-guide will eventually lose interest in you. Once you have done this the anti-guide looses it’s power over your life. When you fear or become angry with an entity such as this you feed it and give it power. So by ignoring it’s presence in your life you bring it down.

Anti-guides are one of the things that help balance this world. They are part of the yin and yang of the universe. Just remember that when your feeling down take a minute to observe the thought and make sure it is your own. You never know you just might be dealing with something supernatural.
