Toxic relationships often seem like a date with Satan. It’s as if some supernatural being is reading your thoughts, feelings, urgings, and beliefs and mocking them mercilessly. While it is easy to believe the person with whom you are in a toxic relationship is willfully and deliberately provoking your horrified response; it is, ultimately, hard to say for sure. It might be, more simply and less blamefully, caused by vastly different perceptions of reality, and the inability of either party to effect any reconciliation between the two views.

In the realm of metaphysical studies, one finds the notion that reality exists in many different potentialities and it is our act of locking in on one in particular that creates “reality.” If this is so, it may well explain why vastly different selections of reality between two (or more) people who must regularly interact might feel like hell on earth. It would also explain the supernatural feel that toxic relationships can have, because it goes to the root of our existence and co-existence.

It seems that well-intended people suffer toxic relationships the most. The hypothesis above might also explain this. If what is maligned in a toxic relationship is something truly beyond our will to manage or change, then applying effort to the problem is the truest cause of the suffering that results. It may be that people who desire connection are most likely to suffer. Does that mean that we should all become cold fish so as not to suffer? That is for the individual to decide; however, it might explain why some people chose this route.

None of this philosophizing on the subject is intended to minimize the truth of the suffering involved in toxic relationships. Intellectual ideas or knowledge can be helpful, but do not create an impermeable buffer against emotional pain. There will be an ongoing need to experience the emotions, apply the intellect, have an emotionally intelligent response, and so on. This cannot be escaped, no matter how ardently one may wish for peaceful and easy relations with others. To date, mankind is not made for that reality. Perhaps, if and when we experience the spiritual revolution some say is coming, we will be, but not yet.

The best thing to do upon finding yourself in a toxic relationship is to consider the reality and non-reality of the situation. Consider how that person might see things in a way that is vastly different from your point of view. Consider why that might be and consider the ways in which that person may be right and you might be resisting their truth for reasons that should be adjusted in light of their co-existence with you, or, how you might change their mind, if that seems appropriate. Also, think of ways in which to communicate and encourage a like examination of your point of view in the other, if you can. Otherwise, run like hell, if you are lucky and you can get away, because it’s not likely to get better without a supernatural sort of effort, if that sort of effort is even possible to undertake.

The Metaphysical: Meta is a word meaning beyond. What is there to discover beyond the physical? There is so much there, beyond the physical body (within the depths of the mind) and not all of it is desirable. In fact there is a layer of ignorance within the mind which is completely undesirable.

From birth right through to this very moment you have been accumulating a subconscious past. This past is what you call yourself, your personality, the person you think of as you. This subconscious layering of past conditioning consists of all your aimless and problematic thinking, your attitudes, beliefs and opinions along with everything that you’ve become attached to in existence since you were born to this world. It also consists of all your psychological and emotional pain, misery, suffering and unhappiness. It is all there, within you, hidden in your mind and it thinks that IT is You! But is it?

Beneath the thin layer of mind known as the subconscious lies the unconscious. But what do you know of the unconscious, this vast and infinitely deep realm of your Psyche? Most people know very little of it because most of them are caught up in the subconscious . . . and I have to ask, are you any different?

Your reality, or what you really are, is hidden within the unconscious mind. The secret is to find a way to Transcend, Divine Through and Move Beyond the layer of ignorance, which you call yourself, the personality. In so doing you will re-connect with a greater Reality/Integrity than the self/personality.

How can you move beyond the conditioned mind and into the depths of the unconditioned mind? There is only one “Pure” way to do this, to move beyond the surface of yourself, and that requires you to become an observer of your “self” (self being everything you think you are . . but are not!). You have to separate your intelligent state of “Awareness” from your conditioned thinking mind and the only way to do this is by becoming “The Intelligent Observer” of yourself. You have to partake in a great “experiment”. You have to take on the role of a scientist and become the observer of yourself. You must sit in self-observation, walk in self-observation and “be” in self-observation 24/7. You have to become the silent witness of all that is happening within your own psyche/mind. There is no other way . . . and sooner or later this is what you must do, if you are to become enlightened, liberated and free from discursive thinking and emotional unhappiness, if you

The question of existence has loomed in the minds of great philosophers since the times of Socrates and Plato. When we talk about existence, a very basic question arises when we take a step back and look at it; What is Existence after all? Is it having a physical body, or is it having an ability to think, or is it having consciousness?

An interesting theory put forward by one of the greatest philosophers of medieval times, Descartes, is about the Deceiving Demon. (The movie Matrix has taken a very basic concept from this theory. In this theory, Descartes puts forward the question that what if we all are just in one long dream and everything happening around us is only our imagination or just a simulation. After all, we come to know that we were dreaming only once we wake up! In the Matrix, the main cast Neo comes to know that the world of his is only a computer simulation only when he gets out of it. So, what if there is this “demon” who is controlling our minds and just making us believe that something is in front of us when it is not there at all. Something like this article is in front of u, whereas actually its just deep, dark empty space!)

This then puts each and every question about anything and anyone in doubt. Our very first principles and laws can then be nothing but our own theories to satisfy our minds. Think about anything (i mean, anything at all) and ask one question to yourself, “Is it possible that the Deceiving Demon is making me believe it is so when actually it is not so?” But after all these questions, on further introspection, can we ever refute the fact that we exist?

This question particularly is of interest because it seems weird that how can the demon deceive us without us existing. Although weirdness is a part of this topic, but this question seems logical enough to be thought over. How can we even be dreaming or doing anything else whatsoever if we do not exist? It leads us to further metaphysical concepts and metaphysics is one branch of philosophy which is famous for producing more questions than answers.

In the end, we just end up with more questions because there is a possibility of doubt and questioning in each and every thing. So, existence not only depends on the way it is defined, but also on the limit to what we can know (that is, if that limit exists). Because we cannot know all, if at all we can anything!
