Spring: A time to hit refresh and revaluate your life

By admin · Monday, March 29th, 2010

With fresh air cool enough to clear one’s head, and warm enough to warrant heading outdoors without a coat, spring is a season of new beginnings. Ice melts, creeks come alive, windows are thrown open and we sweep out the cobwebs of cozier days. Life is changing again, and like the flowers pushing up through the mud, it’s messy and beautiful at the same time.

Despite its beauty, spring can be a stressful season for those of us attuned to the ebb and flow of nature. No matter how refreshing sparkling windows and fresh curtains feel, spring cleaning is work, and the same follows suit in our lives. Change, even change for the better, can be difficult. New opportunities present new challenges; new relationships require a new learning curve. Even gorgeous days with paths untrod often end with sore muscles and muddy shoes in the entryway.

The sunshine revealing dirty corners and dusty windowsills provides the amazing opportunity to take stock of where you are in life, the tools you have, and the challenges you face. Whether a just a few pages on your calendar, or a metaphysical season in your life, spring is your opportunity to grab a journal and a cup of coffee, curl up in a comfy chair, and do a little house cleaning of the soul. Take a deep breath. Ask yourself the hard questions. You might be surprised at the answers you find.

Need some ideas to get you started? Ask yourself: Am I happy? Am I satisfied with my life? Am I excited to get up in the morning? What brings me joy? What do I want to accomplish in the next several weeks/months/years? What measurable goals do I have that will make those goals a reality? What obstacles do I face? What resources do I have to overcome those obstacles? What dreams do I have that seem impossible? What steps am I taking to make those dreams a reality? What do I need to let go of in order to make room for new things?

Start small. Want to exercise more? Make it your goal to tie on tennis shoes and trek around the block at least once each day. Know you need to eat a more balanced diet? Add a serving of vegetables or fruit to each meal. Stressful phone call looming on your “to do” list? Pick up the phone, make the call, and move on in peace.

Most importantly, take a few minutes to sit quietly and absorb the season. Breathe the fresh air. Bask in the sunshine. Allow yourself to just be for a moment or two. Let the cobwebs dissolve in the light of new perspective.

Spring is a season of change, and of new birth. It is proof of redemption and new life. Throw open the windows. Tackle the dust. Take stock of your life, and use this season to step closer to the life you’ve always wanted. Spring forward. Spring into action. Spring into life refreshed.
