Reiki symbols: Should they be kept secret ?
Reiki – the drawing of universal energy in order to promote and facilitate the possibility for healing in one’s self or one’s client. The Reiki Ray has been with us since Dr. Mikao Usui discovered the energy in the early 20th Century, however the possibility to use universal energy for healing is ancient. Dr. Usui named his new form of energy healing Usui Reiki Ryoho. Reiki is actually a combination of two words: rei, which can be interpreted as an intelligence; and ki, which means life force.
Anyone has the ability to learn how to use Reiki in their life by working with a Reiki Master. In a well-taught Reiki class the Reiki Master will explain the universal energy, offer a background on Dr. Usui and the development of Reiki, teach the student about the chakra system, and offer the opportunity for the student to begin clearing out the encoded memories and triggers that cause us to block ourselves from living our life in the way that will serve us best. There are three (or sometimes more, depending on the teacher) levels of Reiki, each conferred upon the student through an attunement process. During this process the Reiki symbols are transferred to the student. After this attunement the metaphysical properties of the symbols become properties available for use during the giving of Reiki. The symbols are taught/given to the student during their Reiki II classses (where three symbols are given) and their Reiki III classes (where the fourth symbol) is added.
It is important to understand that Dr. Usui did not originally attune his students to these symbols. In addition to the basic five principles* Dr. Usui taught from, indivdiduals chosen to receive a Reiki education received instruction in the energetic principles and properties of the Reiki symbols (Sanskrit derived Japanese forms) during the lengthy course of their study. Once the principle and energy was understood attunement to the symbols themselves was not needed to access the energy. Today the study time needed to receive a Reiki certification has been drastically reduced and attuning the student to the symbols empowers the symbols within the student’s energy field in order for those symbols to fulfill their purpose.
The debate on whether or not Reiki symbols should be kept secret continues. Many traditional Reiki Masters hold that the symbols are holy and only to be used by those instructed in their use, because of this, traditional Reiki believes that the symbols must be secret
