Reflections: The truth about life

The Excise of Brutality

In spite of my Metaphysical understanding of people as “Spiritual beings having a human experience,” often the human part is more obvious than not. I have come to call this the “Theory of Relative Stupidity.” Although I may be the first to write an article on the subject (all rights reserved), I credit some very wise men for revealing the idea:

“The difference between what the most and the least learned people know is inexpressibly trivial in relation to that which is unknown.” (Einstein)

“The difference between stupidity and genius is that genius has its limits.” (Einstein)

“Father, forgive them; for they know not what they do.” (Jesus)

This theory, akin to the famous “Murphy’s Laws,” can be stated like this: Everyone is relatively stupid or ignorant, rather than “intelligent” and the degree of stupidity may vary from person to person. I am not using “stupid” in a derogatory way; I am including myself in the human race like everyone else and I certainly would not want to demean myself, as there are plenty of people willing to do that for me. What I am saying is that there is really no room for Egotism, an Egocentric mind, or any other “Ego” excesses of the kind we witness on a daily basis.

We are all fairly dumb in the grand scheme of things. Perhaps that is why the sages tell us that the way of Spirit is not the way of the Ego, which leads nowhere. The way of Spirit is the way of accepting “what is,” loving it all, and embracing the Mystery, the true “genius” behind it all. So, next time we encounter other “stupid” people, perhaps it will help to remember that we are much like them, they are indeed our mirror, and one of the greatest persons found it in his heart to let it go, realizing that they “know not.” None of us “know.”

We need not be surprised that people constantly and continuously do stupid things. We might be pleasantly surprised, though, if we look beyond mind and matter, and focus on the wonder of Life itself. There seems to be much wisdom in whatever it is that enables and sustains the entire universe. The fact that we exist at all, live, and experience life is quite remarkable. We may actually feel, think, do, and say stupid things, but who we ARE is not stupid at all!
