Intellectual Property Today

“Insist on yourself; never imitate.”-Ralph Waldo Emerson

In 2002, the RIAA Recording Industry Association of America) reported that CD sales have fallen by 8.9%, from 882 million units- the revenues fell about 6.7%. RIAA blames internet piracy issues. What does this means? What is piracy exactly and what does it entail and how does it affect us all? Piracy issues are related to intellectual property, which will be discussed next. (Lessig, 2004).

Intellectual properties are those things which are “intangible”, or can’t be touched physically. Yet, at times these things can be touched; they have been birthed by the creator’s mind. These things include music, stories, artwork, and even a person’s voice-which would actually be called a trademark. The humble beginnings of intellectual property actually go back to when the “concept first emerged in medieval times, perhaps the 12th or 13th centuries. This was during the time where attitudes about different ideas, and crafts were just being explored. Patents were before copyrights and so that may prove some distinction between the two, yet there are more kinds of intellectual property. (Long, 1991)

There are four different types of intellectual property and they are each protected by certain laws. The first one is a patent. If someone had an idea; the idea could not be protected, it is a metaphysical aspect, but if that idea was turned into a product, there had to be some laws. For instance, if you were to invent the first time machine, you would need a patent to protect it because it is your property. In the current digital age, computer software can even be patented. It is an invented or programmed product that needs protection from others stealing it. In a true landmark case however, it has been established by the U.S Court of Appeals that “only three areas of subject matter will be unpatentable: the laws of nature, natural phenomena, and abstract ideas. (Jentz, 2008).

The next type of intellectual property is a copyright. A copyright is commonly used for literary or dramatic works, even pictorial, and sculptural works. (Intellectual Property Law). The owner of a copyright has the exclusive right to reproduce and distribute copies of their work. This includes performances like drama and music. A copyright is also considered “intellectual” because it is creative and can be sold and licensed. For instance, a person who writes articles online, or short stories, may want to have their

I wrote to Gene Roddenbury about Piccard being very much like Navy Captains I knew on Navy ships I was on travelling all over the globe, and about Spock and of course Riker. He wrote back and indicated that a Navy Captain was exactly like what he had in mind with Piccard unlike the NASA-woman-in-a-diaper-Navy-ca ptain. We see the Enterprise travelling in space at “warp” speed obviously faster than light which I believe is possible. At least the mathematical equations indicate if one can break the light speed barrier, the equations go back to normal on the other side of light speed, just like the air gets smooth again once the sound barrier is broken. However, to go to other star systems, due to the vast distances, the “warp” light speed has to increase exponentially, not linearly, much like the Richter scale in earthquake magnitude descriptions. More likely, from the way people have observed UFO movement and extremely fast speeds, they are probably travelling interdimensionally or travelling through time. Some guy in his garage will probably invent a real space, or time, or dimension travel machine, not NASA or the USAF or PhDs which just refine and expand on past inventions of flight and rockets, not create new systems as the Wright brothers did. What is often missed by Trekkies wrapped up in the “science” of Star Trek are all of the philosophical and metaphysical and social concepts presented. In most episodes of Star Trek there are 2 or 3 plots of science, philosophy, and social interaction going on simultaneously which is amazing in itself that so much can be well written and given to the viewer in an hour or so of TV program with commercials.

It’s a new competitive sport or game for searching on-line testing both your searching skills and your mastery of language.

Google index of webpages is considered the largest of all search engines. So, it’s very frequent to report millions or tens of millions of pages containing your search word.

On the opposite, there’re some combinations of keywords that return only 1 single result on Google.

The web entrepreneur Gary Stock has a mania with finding these combinations; so, he created this game complete of rules and scores, called "Googlewhacking".

This game tries to find those rare combinations of strange key-words that give only 1 single result on Google.

There’re also rules for getting a score:

1 point for a simple googlewhack

(a single result for your query)

1 point if you learn something and 1 BONUS point if the results are more amusing.

But, ironically, when you find a googlewhack and report it on-line, that page will soon widespread by Google and this googlewhack found will lose its uniqueness.

Mr Stock also suggest that this game can be used for false research projects, answering such answereble metaphysical questions as:

- "What is the only way to defeat both Bruce Lee and Jackie Chan at once?

OCTOPI JUJITSU

- "What did the Sumerians see in those pictographs?"

CUNEIFORM MEATSPACE

My personal, very modest opinion, is that this is a true

MENTAL MASTURBATION. There’s much more useful and amusing things to do on-line!
